Introduction to SCS

Specialized Computer Services, Inc. (SCS) is a full service independent computer software developer and sales organization. SCS has developed software products for Touch Screen Information, Records Management, Automated Telemarketing, Kiosk Information, Ticketing Reservation, Voice Recognition and Knowledge Management Systems.

In support of these basic products, the company integrates and sells hardware and software. Software development is in State-of-the-Art Solutions and Industrial-Strength Relational Databases, Microsoft Windows Application Languages and Lotus Notes with related support services.

Ed Friend

In the early 1980's, Edwin H. Friend, Jr. formed

Specialized Computer Services, Inc. (SCS) a software development company specializing in Internet Sites, Touch Technology for directory systems, message centers and special projects in Atlanta, Georgia. Over the past years, the company has successfully installed Touch Screen Directory & Video Presentation Systems in many locations ranging from Michigan, Colorado,  Louisiana, Washington, D.C. to Miami, Florida.

In 1985, SCS began manufacturing and developing a Touch Screen System. In 1987, we began integrating off the shelf products for the Touch Screen Applications.

In late 1988, SCS completed development of a records management system that uses a microfilm-based storage to simplify the paper flow for large companies. The Automated Retrieval Technology System (ARTS) has replaced a microfilm retrieval system in two Divisions at the headquarters of a major fortune 100 corporate office. The ARTS application has been enhanced with the latest network capabilities and application platform and Y2K upgrades. The ARTS System was enhanced with a Bar Code Tracking System to track the flow of documents from the source to storage facility by page, folder and box.

In early 1989, SCS completed the development of its Automated Telemarketing System that was designed for mass telemarketing. In late 1989, SCS completed the development of its Kiosk Information System (KIS) designed for telephone related electronic billboard advertising and video presentation.

In 1992, entered into a joint venture with the Federal Government with ADA Compliance in the work place using Touch Technology. SCS implemented a complete Touch Technology authoring package. The most recent being the integration of speaker independent Voice Recognition (VRS) to compliment the Touch Screen for the visually impaired and general use.

In 1993, authored a nationwide Lotus Notes Employment Management System automating the document flow for the Federal Government and employees.

In 1995, SCS Media Planner automated the Media Planning, Placement and Tracking for advertising and newspaper companies for their nation wide ad placement. Developed Super Recruiter, a Wide Area Network automated telephone application, hiring and reporting system.

In 1996, SCS designed, developed and integrated an Event Reservation and Ticketing System (Admit1One) for the 1996 Olympic Festival Events. The central system was developed as a 32-bit application to run with Windows 95/NT and an unlimited number of workstations and ticket printers both local and remote locations.

In 1997, SCS designed, developed and integrated a National Advertising Client Server Platform for the Newspaper Industry for their field sales force.

In 1998, developed software and integrated hardware for a Fax Server to automate and facilitate the faxing of documents over multiple phone lines from a local (LAN) and/or wide area network (WAN). Expanded the Touch Technology programs to take advantage of Internet access and the latest in graphic capabilities.

In 2000, assisted in the redesign of a major manufacters Intranet Field Support System involving many portals and platforms. Continued design for web sites for various business types with enhanced programming and graphics. Developed our Knowledge Management System (KMS).  With the SCS Knowledge Management System, the ebb and flow of the information is mapped out, configuring a platform, integration of data from existing systems, adding intelligence features and providing knowledge management functions. The document and data management isn't the only areas addressed, we focus also on managing tasks, projects, employee's expertise, ownership and responsibilities.

In 2001, mastered and implemented an extensive dedicated Web Site for an Archery Tournament Promoter for National Tournaments. Schedules, Sponsor Recognition, Maps with locations, Scoring results with paybacks for every class in all tournaments and Member specific message board with a Coaches Corner. 

In 2002, authored a Microsoft Windows Membership  Registration, Tournament Scheduling and Scoring Database System for the Archery  Promoter to track tournaments in each state with a record from year to year for each participant and the year end financials. The object of development is to completely automate the tournaments for member interaction both off and on site.

In 2003, authored a Microsoft Windows Web Services online application. Web Services eliminate geography as a constraint on who can create, contribute to and use content. Web Services enable tailored, browser based GUI interfaces to manipulate and manage content for the Touch Screen Directory & Information Systems thus providing a standards based foundation for building an Enterprise Wide Content Management Solution. Provides the ability to deliver content to multiple delivery formats for use of technology that supports it. The ability to use content in different documents or information sets and to customize for particular audiences or individuals.

In 2004, authored a new Microsoft Windows Web Services online application for an Intranet, Windows 2003 and ActiveServer Application potentially having 6000 plus users in a Government based environment. SCS developed and programmed a private use online database web application specifically to enhance Customer service and to update Touch Screen Kiosks giving the public expanded use of general information.

In 2005, Upgraded and implemented new Web Hosting and Touch Screen environments to better serve it's clients. Developed and expanded on a Automated Web Hosted Tournament Scheduling and Scoring Application for the Archery Community.

In 2006 - 9, Enhanced the Touch Screen Information Systems and added Wood and Stainless Steel Kiosks in multiple locations in Atlanta, GA and Denver, CO. A number of Hospital Touch Screen Information Systems for CS&G. Sized the Archery Tournament Application for Club 3-D tournaments and web site updating. Design and support Internet Applications. Certified NADA & NASP Archery Instructor teaching adults at KSU.
